When Kendra’s mother moves to San Francisco with her husband, an Army man, Kendra comes along. The main character is Kendra, a young woman who has been raised quite properly in boarding schools in New York. Like many historical novels, the plot of Calico Palace involves multiple twists and turns and I don’t want to spoil them too much. It’s a powerfully feminist book and while some of the romance comes out of nowhere, it contains one of the best descriptions of love that I’ve ever heard.
The book Calico Palace is a romance/historical novel/adventure story that brings the California Gold Rush to vivid life with wonderful characters, a robust sense of humor, some harrowing tragedy (the Gold Rush was not a place for wimps), and a strong message of the importance of building your own family, being emotionally hardy, and seizing the life you want in a forthright way.
